Oficial de la guerra de independencia de los EE.UU. de origen alemán. Ingresó al ejército prusiano a los 16 años de edad y fue capitán en la guerra de los Siete Años. Después del conflicto se retiró del ejército y se desempeñó como chambelán de la corte del príncipe de Hohenzollern-Hechingen; en fecha que se desconoce habría recibido el titulo de barón. Llegó a América del Norte en 1777, recomendado a
George Washington. Fue destinado a adiestrar a las fuerzas continentales en Valley Forge, Pa.; allí formó una disciplinada fuerza combatiente que sirvió de modelo a todo el Ejército continental. Fue nombrado inspector general del ejército, ascendió a general de división (1778) y ayudó a comandar el sitio de
Yorktown.
